The project was to produce a series of book covers for a selection of books from the Phillip Marlowe detective series of books. The books had to give a flavour of the character and genre of the books without being cliched. i tried to suggest this aspect by producing a scenario where the detective clearly has someone under surveillance. The emphasis is on surveillance and waiting. This is indicated by the eyes in the mirror.
This theme runs through all three books with Phillip Marlow shown waiting in his car outside the various 1930's locations. I photographed the interior of a vintage car and used this with the superimposed image of the eyes in the mirror as the template for all three books changing the location each time to reflect the different story in each book.
I used a simple plate of colours and a grainy old photographic effect to suggest the era of the books.
